In a recent achievement, we completed a notable project for the City of Cleveland at the Kovacic Recreation Center, securing the National Mural Award of 2023. We were given submissions of photographs from the local community, which served as the foundation for a visually stunning mural incorporating topographical elements of the neighborhood. The project presented a unique set of challenges, as it involved working with multiple substrates and depths on the designated wall. We successfully brought this vibrant mural to life, gaining well-deserved recognition for artistic excellence.

Process

Meet for a discussion of strategies and concepts regarding the objectives we seek to achieve through this mural design. In what context are we attempting to discourse? To what end does one aim?

Examine room and wall blueprints using the provided document and conduct dimension analysis using the AutoCAD file supplied by the architectural team. Generate concepts utilizing the resources as a structural guide.

Commence color-illustration of the final design once the overarching concept and sketch of the mural’s subject have been finalized, in order to provide a more unified and distinct design concept.

Begin the phase of programming.

The PVC map material and concrete guide are removed using variety of CNC milling techniques.

After the finalization and cutting of all materials, the painting phase commences. Industrial painting equipment is utilized to achieve the finest paint finish possible.

Following the conclusion of the map installation, the cleansing phase commences. Prior to applying sealant over the cement, a two-week period is observed to ensure that it has completely cured.

Upon our arrival at the site designated for mural installation, our first task was to affix the cement guide directly to the brick wall.

The wall is subsequently coated with cement using a specialized cement spray gun that is connected to our industrial gas compressor.

Following the completion of the cement installation phase, the PVC map of downtown Cleveland was affixed to the brick wall utilizing our custom made stainless steel three-inch standoffs

Before finalizing the overall design, conduct an analysis and evaluation of the structure and design, consult with the architect and board members of the city of Cleveland.

The architect team and the City of Cleveland were both pleased with the end result and have expressed that I had exceeded their initial expectations.
